Un piccolo suggerimento a Henrik Hakonsson di Phase One

Phaese One è un'azienda danese che si occupa di fotografia digitale di medio formato da ormai diversi anni, nel 2009 acquisì una buona porzione del mercato di questo settore incorporando l'azienda giapponese Mamiya che era uno dei maggiori produttori mondiali di fotocamere professionali e ottica di precisione. Da quel momento Phase One, in collaborazione con Mamiya ha iniziato a sviluppare una fotocamera digitale che si integrava in un sistema modulare aperto a varie ottiche ed a dorsi digitali di grande qualità. 

Leaf che nel 1991 fu il primo produttore di dorsi dotati di sensori di medio formato, è anch'essa una divisione di Phase One.

Phase One, fino allo scorso 18 febbraio era un azienda posseduta dagli stessi uomini che lavoravano per questo marchio, situazione finanziaria che si era conservata in questo assetto negli ultimi 8 anni, ma che adesso è in mano ad una società britannica, la Silverfleet Capital, che ha comprato il 60% del pacchetto azionario di Phase One, mantenendo alla guida della società Henrik Hakonsson.

In occasione dell'evento collegato alla presentazione di Land Scape di David LaChapelle, a Milano, ho avuto la possibilità d'incontrare anche l'Amministratore Delegato del gruppo Phase One e fargli qualche domanda.

Innanzitutto posso dire che Henrik non è il tipico presidente un po' triste in completo blu e cravatta cui siamo abituati a vedere dalle nostre parti, ma un uomo simpatico ed alla mano che terminato l'evento, ho visto personalmente aiutare i suoi collaboratori a smontare il materiale di scena nel Central Point del Superstudio. 

Naturalmente, Hakonsson è anche una persona molto competente che ha stabilito la filosofia della società e l'ha portata ad avere circa la metà del mercato di questo settore con vendite di circa 3000-5000 pezzi, a seconda di come risponde annualmente il mercato.

L'anno migliore per Phase One è stato il 2012, ma con i nuovi prodotti che adottano sensori molto attesi come i CMOS forniti da Sony, c'è da credere che le vendite potrebbero incrementarsi nuovamente.

Lo stesso sensore Sony è stato montato anche da un nuovo modello di fotocamera di medio formato della concorrenza che ha aggiunto al suo prodotto la possibilità di effettuare registrazioni in video in HD e timelapse in 4K.

Io sono molto interessato a poter registrare il segnale video da un sensore di medio formato, così ho chiesto a Henrik Hakonsson se anche Phase One stia valutando d'aggiungere questa modalità ai suoi futuri prodotti e, se nel caso dovesse prendere questa decisione, si potrebbe pensare anche ad un'uscita dove poter attingere ad un segnale video non compresso. 
Aggiungere una soluzione del genere ai dorsi del Gruppo Phase One farebbe aumentare le vendite in maniera esponenziale, inglobando anche gli utenti del mercato video, ma Mister Phase One ha detto che la sua azienda non è interessata ad accrescere troppo le vendite, perciò non ci sono da aspettarsi grosse sorprese in questo campo.

Probabilmente, il metodo di lavoro di Phase One che prevede la costruzione manuale di ogni pezzo prodotto, siano fotocamere, dorsi o ottiche, non permetterebbe d'incrementare significativamente la produzione e poi c'è sempre da considerare il fatto che utilizzando parti molto importanti comprate da fornitori esterni, può essere che Phase One debba sottostare ad accordi particolari che ne limitano le scelte.

E' anche vero però che un'azienda relativamente piccola può modificare abbastanza velocemente le proprie scelte tecniche e commerciali, soprattutto quando interagisce con altri partner che si muovono in collaborazione con Phase One per trovare le soluzioni migliori ai problemi che si propongono quotidianamente ai fotografi. Ultimamente da Schneider sono arrivati 4 nuovi obiettivi ad otturatore centrale che allargano la gamma delle ottiche utilizzabili dal sistema Phase One/Mamiya Leaf ed altre collaborazioni sono studiate per i sistemi d'illuminazione a flash, insieme a Profoto. Non bisogna poi dimenticare il software di elaborazione di file Raw marchiato Capure One Pro che ultimamente inizia a farsi valere come valida alternativa ad altri software molto utilizzati.

Personalmente, trovo i prodotti Phase One/Mamiya Leaf molto ben fatti, e pensati; una caratteristica del management di questo gruppo all'apice della fotografia di alta qualità è quella d'avere un ottimo dialogo con il cliente le cui esigenze vengono ascoltate e valutate per bene, pertanto spero d'aver in qualche modo stimolato una risposta nell'aggiornamento tecnico di quello che è effettivamente possibile ottenere con i nuovi sensori CMOS. Il live view, il touch screen e la connessione wireless sono già state adottate dai nuovi dorsi IQ2, perché non rendere possibile anche la registrazione video in HD? O aggiungere un'uscita video non compressa? O poter registrare video in 4K? 
Sarebbe anche utile poter registrare timelapse in 4K. 
Io vorrei insistere nel chiedere a Henrik Hakonsson (e magari anche agli azionisti di Silverfleet Capital), di introdurre nuove modalità d'impiego per i nuovi sensori che potrebbero essere utilizzati anche per registrare video in 4K, magari dotando i dorsi con almeno un'uscita HD SDI non compressa. Capisco che ogni prodotto di questo intraprendente Gruppo britannico/danese è fatto a mano in Danimarca ed ha un costo adeguato a queste scelte, ma sicuramente aggiungere importanti modalità d'utilizzo a questi prodotti, conferirebbe un grosso valore a ciò che si acquista e invoglierebbe tantissimi professionisti a staccare più volentieri un assegno piuttosto considerevole. A little tip to Henrik Håkonsson CEO of Phase One

Phaese One is a Danish company that deals with digital medium format photography for several years, in 2009 they acquired a good portion of the market by incorporating Mamiya a Japanese company that was one of the world's leading manufacturers of professional cameras and optics. Since it started the collaboration with Mamiya, Phase One begun to develop a digital camera that was integrated into a modular system open to various lens and digital backs.

Leaf, that in 1991 was the first manufacturer of digital backs with a medium format sensors, is also a division of Phase One.

Phase One, until last February 18 was a company owned by the same men who worked for this brand, this was the financial situation that was stored in this structure over the past 8 years, but now the Phase One Group is in the hands of a British company, the Silverfleet Capital, who has bought 60% of the stake, keeping at the head of the company Henrik Håkonsson.

At the event related to the presentation of Land Scape by David LaChapelle, in Milan, I had the chance to meet the CEO of the Phase One Group, so I asked him some questions.

First of all, I can say that Henrik is not the typical president, a bit sad, wearing blue suit and tie which we usually see here in Italy, but a very friendly nice man.

At the end of the event, I have seen him personally helping the employees to disassemble the prop in the Central Point of Superstudio.

Of course, Håkonsson is also a very competent person who established the philosophy of the company and has led it to be about half of the market in this sector with sales of about 3000-5000 pieces, depending on how the market responds annually.

The best year for Phase One was 2012, but with new products that use highly anticipated as the CMOS sensors are supplied by Sony, it is to believe that sales could increasing again.

The same Sony sensor was also mounted by a new Pentax of medium-format that has added to its product the ability to record video in HD and 4K timelapse.

I am very interested in being able to record the video signal from a medium format sensor camera, so I asked Henrik Håkonsson if Phase One is considering adding this mode in its future products and, if the case were to make this decision, you may also think about an exit where you can tap into an uncompressed video signal.

Adding such solution to the Phase One backs the Group's sales would increase exponentially, also incorporating users in the video market, but Mister Phase One said that his company is not interested in increasing sales too much, so there will be not to expect big surprises in this field.

Probably, the method of work of Phase One that involves the manual construction for each piece, camera, back or lense, would not significantly increase the production of, and then there is always to consider the fact that by using very important parts you buy from external suppliers, it may be that Phase One should be subject to special agreements which limit the choices.

It 'also true that a relatively small company can change quite rapidly their technical and commercial choices, particularly when it interacts with other partners that move in conjunction with Phase One to find the best solutions to the problems that are proposed for photographers on a daily basis. Lately Schneider designed 4 new lens with a central shutter that widen the range of the optical system used by the Phase One / Mamiya Leaf. Other collaborations are designed for flash lighting systems, along with Profoto.

Not forgetting the software processing Raw files marked capure One Pro 7 that recently began to assert itself as a viable alternative to other widely used software.

Personally, I find the products Phase One/Mamiya Leaf very well made, and thought; a feature of the management of this group at the peak of high-quality photography it is to have a good dialogue with the customer whose needs are heard and valued for good, so I hope to have somehow stimulated a response in technical updating than it is actually possible to achieve with the new CMOS sensors. The live view, the touch screen and wireless connection have already been adopted by the new IQ2 backs, why not make it possible to record video in HD? Or add uncompressed video output? Or record video directly in 4K?

It would also be useful to record timelapse 4K.

I would like to insist in asking Henrik Håkonsson (and perhaps also to the shareholders of Silverfleet Capital), to introduce new methods of use for the new sensors that could be used to record video in 4K, perhaps also by providing the backs with at least one output HD SDI uncompressed. I understand that every product of this enterprising British/Danish group is handmade in Denmark and has an appropriate cost due to these choices, but definitely adding important ways to use these products, would give a big value in what you buy and would make many new professinals much happier to spend their money.
